If you’ve been following me on my Facebook page since the beginning (did you know I’m on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest?), you probably saw this before. I’m a big fan of gourmet grilled-cheese and I couldn’t resist posting this today because it’s apparently National Grilled-Cheese Day! 🙂
What makes a grilled-cheese gourmet and healthier? Like anything else, it’s all about the quality of the ingredients you use. Make sure to use high quality organic ingredients and you will have high quality organic meals. By following this simple principle, you can make almost any recipe healthy.
Deconstructed basic grilled-cheese
First, instead of using a slice of processed cheese (if that can be called ‘cheese’. haha), use a slice of real organic cheese made with raw milk that came from grass-fed cows who live a happy life out roaming in the sun (happy cow = happy milk = delicious cheese), something that will provide you with good nutrients. To make it a bit more gourmet, instead of using a traditional cheddar, how about using Emmental (Swiss) or Gouda or Havarti, etc.?
Then, there’s the bread. Don’t use what one of my friends calls ‘sponge bread’! The cheap white bread brings no nutrition whatsoever (empty calories = you get the calories but your body gets no nutrition), no fibres, and not to mention pretty bland-tasting! Go for the nutritious and tasty cracking artisan wholegrain bread from a local bakery! Or if you can’t get that, then at least get a wholesome wholegrain, multigrain bread, which will give you plenty of nutrients and fibres.
Finally, go for it, use real butter! While butter only contains 1 or 2 ingredients, margarine has a long list of unpronounceable ingredients and is man-made, using synthetic ingredients. Remember, margarine is only one molecule away from plastic!
And THAT, my friend, will result in a healthy AND delicious basic grilled-cheese. Served with a delicious green salad with slices of apples and raw walnuts… YUM!
Enjoy! 🙂
