Are you drooling yet looking at the pictures? I certainly had to stop myself from eating a spoonful of it while I was making it! and technically, I could’ve since all the ingredients are edible. lol
Last week, I shared 7 tips to eat healthy and organic on a budget, well here is yet another way to save money AND be healthier at the same time. Part of living a healthy lifestyle involves not only paying attention to what we put into our bodies (food, medications, etc.), but also what we put onto our bodies, like creams, lotions, makeup, and even clothes. Everything we put on our skin ends-up in our bodies, so it is important to choose items that contain a small number of ingredients and no synthetic ingredients (or at least as least as possible), and using as much whole, organic ingredients as possible. It’s better for our health, but also much better for the environment as well!
Even though I’ve changed my cosmetics and other personal products to healthy, natural and organic ones many years ago, it can get hard sometimes to find a truly natural product, and in my quest to always simplify and go with whole organic ingredients, I started making some items myself. I’ve been making (and selling on Etsy) my homemade bath salts and body/face scrubs, which I’ve had very good feedback about. I personally love them! I recently gave one to an old friend of mine in Montreal and she said that her teenage son tried it and raved about how soft his skin was! haha
I’ve recently started looking into making my own creams and salves. I’ve made a couple of batches, and this is my latest one, which I am sharing with you, so that you too can make it and enjoy this ultra-moisturizing body butter! I recommend applying it after a hot shower, so that it sinks in the skin faster and more easily. A very small amount goes a long way, and you’ll want to massage it in your skin.
I won’t lie to you, it requires some “hands on” and a bit of time, plus it is an investment at the beginning since you’ll have to buy more than what is required to make this batch, however, this will open up a world of possibilities for you and save you LOTS of money in the end. I’ve made this batch using organic ingredients that I bought at my local health food store, I calculated that it cost me around $22-23 (CAN) to make it (not the total cost to buy all the ingredients needed, and not including the glass jar); however, I know that my husband and I will be using it and it will last quite a while, so it ends up being very cheap in the long run, and I’m sure I can find less expensive organic ingredients, like ordering in bulk online. (Like Mountain Rose Herbs)
I am sooooo looking forward to quenching my winter skin with this ultra-moisturizing butter! Ohh baby! This is going to be sweet!

Luxurious non-toxic whipped body butter makes approx. 375 ml
- 1 cup pure raw organic shea butter (fair-trade)
- 1/2 cup pure raw, unrefined, organic coconut oil (fair-trade)
- 1/3 cup pure beeswax (grated) [ideally from an organic farm] — for strict vegans, you can leave this out and add a bit more coconut oil and olive oil, but you’ll have to wait longer for the mix to ‘set’ and it might be more liquid — I recommend using the beeswax if possible
- 1 Tbsp organic hemp oil (or organic sweet almond oil)
- 1 Tbsp organic Argan oil
- 1 Tbsp high quality cold pressed, extra-virgin, organic olive oil
- (optional) dried organic herbs/flowers of your choice (like lavender, calendula, chamomile, etc.)
- pure essential oil(s) of your choice (I used lemon)
Put the first 3 ingredients (shea butter, coconut oil and beeswax) into a small pot on very low temperature (no more than medium-low), and wait for it to melt. It takes about 10-15 minutes. By melting it at a low temperature, you retain all the benefits from the raw oils and beeswax.
When it’s all completely melted, remove from heat and add some beneficial dried plants of your choosing. I used what I had, and that would be good and calming for the skin as I plan on using it on my face as well. I put 1 Tbsp of organic lavender flowers, a bag of organic chamomile tea (don’t make the same mistake I made. Keep the whole bag, don’t open it), and a handful of whole calendula flowers. Cover with a lid and let it cool/steep for about 40 minutes. About 10-15 minutes into it, then add the rest of the oil (hemp, argan, olive).
Mix everything, and wait another 25-30 minutes.
You’ll need to pour everything in a small bowl through a sieve to remove all the bits of flowers (I had to put mine through a cheesecloth to remove all the tiny parts of chamomile! haha).
At this point, you can add 5-10 drops of pure essential oil(s) of your choosing. I added 5 drops of lemon essential oil, because I like the smell, but it is faint, next time I’ll add a few more.
Put the bowl in the fridge for about 10 minutes, or until it barely starts hardening. If it gets too hard, you’ll need to warm it up a bit again until you can mix it. Then whip it! I used the whip attachment of my handheld blender, as if I was making whipped cream, it took about 3-4 minutes at the most. You want a light and airy consistency, like butter. Then spoon into clean glass jars and close with a lid. Keep at room temperature.
Enjoy!!!

This is so great!!! You make it look so easy too. 🙂

It really isn’t hard. I wonder why I didn’t get into this sooner 😉

You did an excellent job! I’ve made my own shea butter mixes as well, but haven’t thought to add dried herbs! I add in some aloe vera gel for extra moisture and to cut some of the ‘greasiness’ of the shea butter and oils.

Thanks!
I tried adding aloe juice in a previous batch, but it didn’t mix properly, so I thought I’d keep it straight up. haha I will be making other creams later with less oil for a daily facial cream, but this body butter is perfect after a hot bath or shower, it sinks in the skin within a few minutes massaging it. It’s great for cold winter weather we’ve been having in Canada. haha
Thanks for dropping by!

It’s very luxurious! 🙂

Hai! It sounds amazing and wonderful, with the argan oil and the herbs! Do you think cocoa butter instead of beeswax would work as well?
Eyecandypopper says
Hey! You could absolutely use some cocoa butter instead of beeswax, but it might not be as fluffy, but it will still be amazing! I’d love to hear about it if you give it a try! 🙂

Yes, it does look good enough to eat. I make a similar vegan friendly body butter (100% organic) and I’m working on making a vegan friendly lip balm body butter (about 90 percent organic).
Thanks for the recipe – now I’m off to make your gluten free flatbread with chickpea flour!
Warmest regards,
Niecey

Very nice! Good job! 🙂

Hi,Does this need to be refrigerated and how long does it keep for ? making for a friend that it’s gluten free it looks really good making it right now now 😉
Eyecandypopper says
You’re such a good friend! No, it doesn’t need to be refrigerated, and it should last 2-3 months, depending on how hot it is where you live. If you live in a tropical area, perhaps keeping it in the fridge might be good 🙂 I’m in Canada, so it stays fresh.
